When you prepare to go on a bike ride be sure and check your bike over.
- Check your tires for wear and inflation. The proper tire inflation is stamped on the side of your tire. Riding on low tires can cause flats and wheel damage.
- While checking your tires check to be sure your wheels are properly secured and quick release are tight. A loose wheel can cause a catastrophic accident.
- Check that your brakes can stop your bike. Squeeze your brake levers or step on your coaster brakes to see they are working.
- While checking your brakes rock the bike back and forth holding the front brake to see that the handle bars and headset are tight.
- Check that the seat is at the right height for you and that it is secure. You should be able to comfortably reach the pedals with just a slight bend in your knee when the pedal is at the bottom of its arc.
- Check to be sure you have reflectors front and rear. If you’re going to riding after dark you will need front and back lights. While you are at it a bell is a good idea also.
- Be sure your chain is in good condition and well oiled. It is also a good idea to give the bike a quick once over to be sure nothing is loose and nothing can get into the spokes while riding.
- Always wear highly visible clothing.
- Don’t leave without putting on your helmet!
- If you have any questions about any of the above ask an experienced rider or your local bike shop.
